Universal education IN INDONESIA
Education is an important aspect of Indonesia. The school system is very diverse and there are over 250,000 schools in Indonesia. This educational system is the third largest in the Asia region and the fourth largest in the world with over 50 million students and 2.6 million teachers. Over the years, the government has been spending more money on education ever since the economic crisis Indonesia experienced. Sadly, millions of children are at risk of no longer having separate science classes started in June. Recently, the Indonesian education officials drafted a proposal that science and social studies classes should be merged together in order to spend more time focusing on religious education. According to a NY Times article, “Officials who back the changes say that more religious instruction is needed because a lack of moral development has led to an increase in violence and vandalism among youths, and that could fuel social unrest and corruption in the future.” This shows that discipline needs to be implemented before the chaotic behaviors start to erupt.
