gender equality IN INDONESIA
When it comes to gender equality, Indonesia is ranked 32 out of 86 (2012) which is a significant decrease from the previous rating in 2009 which was 55 out of 102. This statistics shows that equal rights are being respected and governmental action is being initiated in order to improve this country’s overall status. In contrast, there are circumstances where women do not have the authority to make their own decision. In most cases of pregnancy in Indonesia the women only keep boy children because they are more likely to be successful. According to an IRIN article, a man and his wife were expected to have a child and the hospital suggested for the female to undergo a -section, however this procedure was to much of a financial burden considering it costed US $1,000-1,500. Instead, the man took his wife to a midwife to deliver the baby and unfortunately she did not survive the delivery. This example alone shows how gender inequality endangers women’s health in Indonesia due to the fact that the women was unable to make her own decision as to how she wanted to deliver her child. A woman's lack of power on her health care decisions is putting them at a higher maternal mortality rate, therefore it is important to promote gender equality across the world. If Indonesia achieves the millennium goal for promoting gender equality then they will enhance the development of human rights, education, health, and access to the work force.
Policies
