I decided to research Indonesia because I already have a brief understanding of the economic structure of this country, however I am unfamiliar with the cultural and political background. Although previously I only focused on the crisis that is affecting orangutans in Indonesia, I think it is important to consider other factors that contribute to the palm oil industry. Palm oil is a very cheap oil to produce however it is done unsustainably meaning the critical habitat of orangutans is being destroyed to make it. Clearly, this issues is important to me so I would like to further advance my knowledge on the factors that contribute to orangutan extinction. I look forward to learning more about each sector that makes up a country and its people.
This project enabled me to expand my knowledge and understanding of Indonesia. It is extremely important to learn about the direct activities that occur within this country before making judgements. After gathering data from the Freedom House Report, I was shocked to learn that Indonesia does not have the adequate tools and facilities to properly teach and care for their residents. With this in mind, I was able to start generating ways to address the Millennium Development Goals. The Heritage Foundation Index was another valuable source because it displayed the lack of governmental patrol and law enforcement within Indonesia.
The Millennium Development Goals are a way for Indonesia to strengthen their country and guide them to a successful future. Indonesia is already moving in the right direction by making wiser choices and thinking more about the people rather than the profit. For example, Indonesia has already achieved goal #1, eradicating poverty and hunger, Target 1A, goal #3, universal primary education, Target 3A, and goal #6, combating HIV/Aids and other diseases, Target 6C, goal. For majority of the other goals, Indonesia is on track to achieving these goals by the year 2015. With positives comes negatives. Indonesia is having a difficult time halting the spread of HIV/Aids and promoting the use of condoms between both married and unmarried people. This MDG is known to need special attention, which I didn’t find out until after I completed my budget. However, if I were to do this project over again I would definitely reconsider how I dispersed the money in my budget and use more on combating HIV/Aids.
Overall, this project was very interesting because I was able to learn about a country of my own interest, and incorporate a budget that makes more sense to my understanding of how Indonesia functions and the improvements that it needs to make. I decided to make a website which acted as a digital house for all the data, statistics, and information I gathered throughout the course of the month.
