addressing poverty in indonesia
The poverty rate for Indonesia is large concern with 32.5 million Indonesians currently living below the poverty line and approximately half of all the households remain crowded around the national poverty line. The earthquake and tsunami that struck on December 26, 2006 seriously damaged the villages and people of the Aceh and Northern Sumatra areas. Since these disasters struck, Indonesia has not fully recovered from all the damage that was left. Considering Indonesia already had a large amount of people living in poverty this made matters much worse than before. This is why 21% of the loan is designated to the Bina Ekonomi Sosial Terpadu (BEST) organization. The objective of this NGO is to improve the prosperity of underprivileged groups in the urban part of Indonesia. Most of their development programs are located in urban areas where sanitation and environmental condition are often poor. If poverty in Indonesia decreases in both rural and urban areas, children will be able to advance the learning and have access to adequate health care. This means that reducing the number of people suffering from poverty and hunger also works for achieving goals #2, 4 and 5.
